Amanda advised me to try using the spring onions available at the Ho Fo for her Israeli Couscous with Roasted Mixed Veggies and Chevre. She said they were especially delicious. Eerily, as soon as I purchased them, I came across Mark Bittman's recent blog post about…you guessed it, spring onions. According to him, spring onions are like "scallions on steroids." Kind of like that.
Spring Onions

Get out !!! I went shopping today for our dinner tonight. I had transplanted two of my herb plants and had a small pot I was thinking about finding another herb to plant. Stop and Shop, I don't know what you guys would call it, with your lingo like Ho Fo, so is it top and hop ??? Anyway they usually have a few potted herbs in the veggie section. None today, but I picked up SPRING ONIONS and was like wow I have never seen these before !!! I am going to go on line and see if I plant one will I get more, I have transplanted chives from a neighbor's yard, and they have small bulbs, and they have multiplied like crazy. Stay tuned.
I call Stop and Shop "Slop and Shop." Another friend refers to it as "Hop and Bop." Someone else I know calls Ho Fo "Whole Paycheck."
I did some research and as far as I can tell you need to plant spring onions from seed. I am about a month late in doing that. Instead I am going to try and grow garlic. Just separate a whole garlic into cloves. Plant two inches deep with the pointed end facing up. I will let you know how I make out. My only fear is that the goldens were with me when I planted them. They are just so nosey and need to see everything I do. Hopefully they won't dig them up and make lunch out of them.
Maybe I'll do that! It seems pretty easy. It would be nice to have some green garlic too.
I already have spouts of green coming out of my planted garlic !!! I love to watch things grow. My perennial herb garden is getting larger. We are talking about building a green house onto our house in a few years. I will be in my glory getting to garden all year long.
That's so cool! The first buds are always so exciting. Your gardens are amazing. I have some urges around planting in the backyard here, but I fear my laziness may triumph in the end. If I plant, will I then water?? It's a big question. That said, fresh herbs on the porch are a definite.
You know what's sad? There's a greenhouse here that I put a bunch of fresh herbs in when the weather began to cool. I watered them VERY intermittently, leading directly to their demise. I think there is one survivor. Not sure. Must check.
