I made them!
Pretty funny story, which I will relate to you in spite of my pride. I accidentally mixed the sugars with the flour rather than with the butter. The recipe told me to mix the dry ingredients and I stupidly interpreted the sugar as being one of those, although I have made cookies a MILLION times and know FULL WELL that you mix the butter with the sugar. But I was so caught up in the "newness" of the cookie that I threw convention totally out of the window. After I realized my error, I decided that it couldn't go that wrong, cookies being but a mix of a huge amount of butter and sugar.
I was a bit curious about how the whole wheat flour would go. I would say: not as much difference as I anticipated. Perhaps because it only made up half of the recipe?
On the whole, I thought it was pretty good! I would definitely make it again. D called when they had just finished baking. I told him that cookies were in existence. He nearly hung up on me. The next thing I knew, there was a knock on the door. I think he ate 5 or something.
I thought they were a bit dense. I think this may have been because I cut the recipe in half, despite your recommendations. Perhaps I should add more baking soda. Also, the butter/sugar whipping error.
I totally agree with you about taking them out before they are fully cooked! And here's a publicity stunt I pull: after I have built the little mounds on the cookie sheet, I stick a couple more chips on the top of each to ensure that they appear to be chock full of morsels. Which, of course, they are. But a little extra hype never hurt anyone.
