Rss Reader

I love my Google RSS Reader so much I feel it is my duty to spread the word. Some of you methinks already have an RSS reader set up, but if you don't, here's a quick guide. By using it, you can get live updates from all of your favorite sites at the same time. An RSS reader works just like email—whenever a website you are tracking (i.e., Ladies Recipes, NYTimes Most Emailed Stories, your friend's blog, etc.) posts something new, a linked message will be delivered to your reader. Instead of visiting multiple websites to check for new content, the content comes to you! And it's all in one place.

The Ladies Recipe site has 3 important feeds: new recipes, new blog posts, and comments (both on recipes and in the blog). I subscribe to all three, so I'm always updated whenever someone posts something new. I also use it to subscribe to a bunch of other news websites and blogs. I love it!

I use the Google Reader, but it is only one of many options. I'm recommending it because it's free, easy to use, and you don't have to download anything. If you already have gmail, all you need to do is activate your Reader and you're good to go. If you do not have a Google account, you get an email account, a Picassa photo account, a Reader account, and more just by signing up once.

First, visit the Google Reader website to set up an account or sign in with your gmail account.

Once you have an account, you need to start adding "subscriptions" to websites you like. There are two ways to do this. You can click on the "Add a Subscription" box in Google Reader and enter in the URL. Presto! Or…

By clicking on a website's orange RSS button, you can subscribe directly from websites you like. For instance, let's say you'd like your Reader to notify you whenever someone posts a new item in the Ladies Recipes blog. If you visit the Blog home page, you'll see a little orange button that looks like this: feed-icon-14x14.png

If you click on it, you'll see an option to subscribe to the website's feed using Google Reader at the top of the page.

That's it! Your life will be transformed. No, really!
